Dowel: proper use

As a rule, all shelf brackets have several mounting holes, which allows you to distribute the weight into parts. However, they need dowels that do not protrude from the wall when screwing in the screws. Plastic wing dowels correspond to these conditions. Each of them is able to withstand a weight of 15-25 kg, and they are designed to prevent them from tearing as they are attached to the back of the plastered wall.

These dowels will need to drill a hole in the wall
Set the shelf to the desired height and position it horizontally using the alcohol level. Then make marks on the wall with a sharp pencil. Drill holes of the required size (corresponding to a width of 0.9 cm for these 1.6 cm dowels) in the marked places. Then insert the dowels. Some plastic casement dowels need to be "opened" after they are placed in the wall.

Tips for choosing dowels
1. Inspect the wall before selecting the dowel.
Before buying dowels, inspect the wall to determine its thickness, the depth of the room behind it, and also make sure that there are no obstacles behind it. This simple step will take no more than a few minutes and will ensure a successful result, not an unexpected failure.

Drill a 3 mm diameter hole in the drywall near the place where the dowel will need to be inserted. Fold the 2-3 cm long wire at a 90 degree angle to make a hook, and thread it through the hole. Rotate it in a circle to make sure there are no other obstacles. Press it all the way down and make a mark on the hook to find out the depth of the room behind the drywall. Then securely attach the hook to the other side of the wall and make a second mark to determine the thickness of the wall itself. This amount of information will be enough to select the most suitable plug, while avoiding contact with pipes or electrical cables.

2. Align the dowel with the wall thickness.
Find out on the package which wall and its thickness corresponds to the selected dowel. For example, some plastic wing dowels have a gripping radius of 0.9 cm to 1.3 cm and are not suitable for plaster walls with a thickness of 2 cm. Most dowels have their own sizes with different "grip radii", so you should have no problems finding the right one.

3. Use the screw corresponding to the dowel.
Some dowels are sold complete with metal screws, but they can usually be replaced with wood screws or gypsum screws of the same size. For metal wing dowels, on the contrary, only screws corresponding to the size of the dowel thread are suitable. If the screws are supplied with dowels, check the "maximum reinforcement thickness" on the package.

If, for example, you want to attach a 2 cm thick wooden shelf to the wall, and the maximum reinforcement thickness is 1.6 cm, you will need to buy longer screws of the same type. If you want to use decorative screws attached to the object that you are going to attach to the wall, you need to find a suitable dowel for the screws.
